Pattern Ikat No. 2

Ancient Ikat Through Modern Form is an exhibition of weavings by Oakland-based artist Ramona Downey.  Made using silk, cotton, dyes, and sequins, these large-scale works feature vivid colors and patterns achieved through blurred lines that are uniquely characteristic of the Ikat process that originated over 5,000 years ago. Clouds are incorporated with shimmering sequins, abstract figures communicate with one another through vibrating patterns surrounded by chevron stripes, and rectangular color fields inspired by Mark Rothko are magnified in a dyed silk warp with a cotton weft.  The purely technical, historical aspects of the craft are present, enhanced by modern forms and a rich saturation that gives them an otherworldly presence.
