This brown and black stained pottery is made in the region of Yojulea in Oaxaca. It is surface-fired, and the potters also use a rare technique of tannin staining to give it a shiny burnish. Each plate rim is hand scalloped, and the backside is decorated in intricate geometric and floral motifs. Following in the Oaxacan tradition that dates back thousands of years, each plate contains the natural markings created during the firing process - making them truly individual.
