Blair Saxon-Hill’s fabric works are rich, fantastical collages on canvas wrapped panel. Her most recent series looks to collage masters Romare Bearden, Matisse, and the Proto-Surrealist 16th c. painter Arcimboldo for inspiration. Saxon-Hill's characters are everyday women that engage with or take on the features of a swan, praying mantis, shrimp, fish, and other evocative life forms - blurring our sense of knowing and playing with the mythical. Saturated with buoyancy and whimsy, they sparingly employ additional materials such as climbing rope and telephone cord. Meant to be viewed in full at a distance, these works are comprised of multiple textile histories and are bursting with pattern and texture. Carefully hand-sewn, not as a seamstress but as an artist, in a charming and inconsistent manner, they are as playful as the imagery itself.
