These exquisite ceramics are made in the state of Michoacán, Mexico, where expert craftsmen extract clay from the earth that is then carried by burro to the town of San José de Gracia. The clay is then sculpted to create these works of art in the shape of nopales (cactus), candelabras, and piñas (pines, not to be mistaken for pineapples). There are only a few families making these glazed ceramics, as they continue the traditions of Michoacán, making it a vital center of craft in Mexico.
