This extraordinary work of antique folk art combines scrollwork, calligraphy, and sponge printing. Made in 1780 in France by an untrained artist named Celina David, this work features decoative motifs surrounding a poem titled, "La Rose et La Violette", describing the difference betweeen a rose and a violet. It reads, "One is timid, the other a coquette; one loves light, the other shade; one would choose to live for just one day attracting all kinds of admiration, the other does not wish to create envy in others but lives for a whole season." Fine condition with slight tanning at the edges.
